Trident Medical Center’s Patient Safety Grade Reflects Top National Performance
(Charleston, SC), November 14, 2023 –Trident Medical Center has earned a second consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
“Quality healthcare is safe, effective, and people-centered. It’s also timely, integrated and efficient,” explained Trident Health Chief Medical Officer Jane Appleby, MD. “I’m especially proud of our colleagues for maintaining a patient-first approach to care, especially in a year in which we opened a new mental health hospital, Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness, and our fourth freestanding ER, James Island Emergency. Earning a second consecutive ‘A’ from Leapfrog is evidence of our continued commitment to consistently providing quality care that is measurable and compassionate to our patients.”
Trident Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Jenn Freund, MSN, RN, NE-BC added, “A second consecutive ‘A’ from Leapfrog is also evidence of our continued focus on making decisions on what’s best for our patients. And, I’m especially proud of our nurses and other clinicians, who are increasingly caring for patients with complex medical conditions.”
Trident Medical Center, a 321-bed acute care hospital, is a part of Trident Health, which also includes 124-bed Summerville Medical Center; 60-bed freestanding mental health hospital, Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness; and four freestanding ERs –Brighton Park Emergency, Centre Pointe Emergency, James Island Emergency and Moncks Corner Medical Center.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.
“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Trident Medical Center made a true commitment to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”
